Ceylon Orange Pekoe
Ceylon Orange Pekoe
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, has been providing excellent teas since the mid 1800's and is currently one of the largest tea producing countries in the world. Prior to the introduction of tea plants to Sri Lanka, this country was primarily known for its crops of cinnamon and coffee. Due to economic changes, which affected the cinnamon crop, and a fungal disease, which devastated the coffee plants, Ceylon began experimenting with tea plants in 1839. It wasn't until 1867, when James Taylor, a British planter, began a tea plantation in Kandy, that tea was established as a viable industry. His venture was soon followed by other tea gardens in and around the area.
Sri Lanka has 6 growing regions: Kandy, Uda Pussellawa, Uva, Ruhuna, Dimbula and Nuwara Eliya. The central highlands of Sri Lanka offer humidity, cooler temperatures and consistent rainfall, all of which provide a favorable environment for high quality teas.
Ceylon teas are best paired with foods such as breakfast meals (breads, eggs, smoked fish, bacon, etc.), light savory foods, meats, eggs, cream cheese, pastries and fruit, to name a few.
The medium sized black-brownish leaves, of this high grown Ceylon Orange Pekoe Tea, produce a deep amber cup with a brisk, well-rounded, flowery taste. This is a tea that is comprised of teas from different growing areas, blended together to create a consistent, delicious taste profile year after year.

I blend teas so that we can vary what we drink each day. This blends really well with Assam and Darjeeling. A good Orange Pekoe. I've never drunk it on its own, so no idea how that works, but it's great in a blend with other black teas.
Started using this tea a year ago to make my kombucha and it's absolutely the best I've used. Also pairs well with the dried ginger.

This is a very strong Tea. The full flavor surprised me at first but grew on me as I finished my cup.Not one Ill drink every day, but certainly when Im looking for a flavorful strong cup to get me through that 2pm lull in my day.
Before trying this S&V tea my knowledge of Orange Peko was almost exclusively as when mixed with others teas in standard grocery-store teas of lesser quality. By contrast I found the flavor this tea to be bold and uncomplicated except for an astringent finish. Bold to the point that I dont care for it alone nearly as much as when mixed (about 1/3) with another good black tea, such as Ceylon Blackwood Black. Either way, this is definitely a tea worth trying. 4/5
