For teas to be listed as "organic" they have to be certified by an accredited organization. Some of the main agencies regulating the industry are the European Union, USDA National Organic Program, and Demeter (Germany).
While once thought of as a grass roots movement, organic teas are now perceived to be a value added benefit not only for the farmer and the land, but for the consumer as well.
