Located in South Asia, and bordered by China and India, Nepal is home to some of the largest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest which is the highest point anywhere on Earth. Nepal is comprised of 75 districts, one of which is the district of Panchthar. Panchthar is located in the Mechi Zone in the easternmost part of Nepal. It borders the Darjeeling region of West Bengal, India, and enjoys the same soil and climatic conditions as Darjeeling.

This certified organic estate, The Kanchanjangha Tea Estate and Research Center, is located in Ranitar, Panchthar, Nepal at an elevation of 1300 to 1800 meters above sea level. The garden lies at the foothills of Mt. Kanchanjangha, which encompasses large and diverse ecoregions consisting of forests, meadows and grasslands. Formed as a cooperative venture in 1984, the original 100 local farmers joined their land holdings to produce organic, orthodox tea. Today the estate provides free housing for the more than 600 famers in the cooperative as well as free schooling for all the children. Watch this video for more information.

This high-quality oolong tea is beautiful to behold and delightful to taste. With an abundance of white tips, the long, twisted, curly brown leaves, brew to a pale amber cup. You'll savor the smooth, delicate, slightly sweet medium body taste that makes this tea an all-day sipper.

Brew tea at 194ºF - steep for 3-4 minutes.

Exceptional

This is top-notch tea. Brews to a medium-pale color. Body is medium-light. Aroma is delightful: soft and complex; I get notes of honeysuckle and dried fruit. Flavor is sweetish and very smooth, a touch of astringency/pucker on the finish that adds complexity and keeps you coming back for another sip. Gives some vegetal flavors on the finish in addition to aromas above. Can stand up to a couple of steepings.

Lightly floral

This oolong brews a beautiful medium bodied floral cup. Reminiscent of a warm spring day.

Hard to define

This oolong is immediately distinguishable by its aroma, which is one of the most pleasant and unique of any oolong I've tried. It's flavor is much more difficult to describe. It is slightly sweet, and not quite as delightful smelling as before infusion. It's also a lighter brew, so those looking for bolder oolong would do to try the China offerings. I would categorize this as an 'advanced' tea drinkers oolong - if your palate is experienced with them, you'll enjoy a lot of subtle flavors and aromas. The presentation of this tea is exceptional.

Intriguing

This is a tea like one I have not tasted before. It has a sweetness at the beginning which I like, but is followed by a subtle Pu-her taste which was unexpected. It might just be my taste buds and I would be interested in hearing from others if they experienced the same. The second time brewing I missed that sweetness in the beginning but would purchase it again as it is intriguing indeed.

Smooth subtle tea

This tea has a subtle sweet flavor profile. While it does have some characteristics of oolong, it steeps and has a weight more similar to a white tea to me. This is much lighter in taste than a China or Taiwan oolong, but for those who enjoy white tea, this is a great option. The advice of steeping for 3-4 minutes was good advice. Many oolongs only need 2 minutes, but this oolong definitely needs the extra steep time. Multiple infusions work very nicely.
