Georgian BOP - WS
Georgian BOP - WS
In the western area of Georgia, at the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, the fertile soil, fresh running water and clean air make exemplary growing conditions for this tea.
This tea comes from a garden located close to the national park Mtirala in the southwest area of Georgia. The Mtirala National Park is located between the Black Sea and the Adjara Mountains. The name Mtirala ("to cry") refers to the abundant rainfall in this area.
For decades teas in this area were produced only for the Russian market, however, approximately 10 years ago the producers began exporting them as well. The peak tea producing season here is from April to August.
This small leafed, Broken Orange Pekoe, tea yields an amber colored cup with a forest aroma and a smooth full flavor with a slight oaky taste and a touch of sweetness in the cup. Perfect at lunchtime or as an afternoon pick me up.

I picked up a little bit of Georgian tea in Leningrad in 1987 and was very sad when it ran out. But I was thrilled when this appeared at Simpson & Vail. It gave me quite a flashback- a light, fruity , maybe delicate tea I'd had so long ago and thought I'd never encounter again.
I have vague memories of having drunk Georgian tea before and expected a smoky cup. The dry tea leaves already surprised me with a fruity aroma. The actual tea is a wee bit on the light side, but has a fabulous mixture of tastes. The smokiness is subdued (unlike the smoked Assam that S&V now carries), there is a foresty overtone and distinct fruitiness ('tropical fruit'?). Anyways, an interesting tea that I'll definitely order again. Worth trying and enjoying!
We ordered a few extra items to get our price range up for free shipping and this is one we hadn't tried before. My British husband is a tea snob and has completely fallen in love with this tea called Georgian BOP. He has to ration himself to only one of this type a day because he's running out so I thought I had better get back on the website and order him some more!
This tea reminds me of a mild pu-erh. While I did not pick up on smokiness, I rather picked up on a peaty taste which I assume is the oakiness as stated in the description.
