March Celebrations with Tea
The internet is amazing. There are all sorts of things you can find. For instance, did you know about some of the holidays and days of importance in March? Of course, we have Fat Tuesday & Ash Wednesday (although these don’t always fall in March), the Ides of March, St Patrick’s Day, and the First day of Spring. But here are a few you may not have heard about….
March 3rd is I Want you to be Happy Day! Well that’s awesome! I think that’s the perfect holiday to share a cup of tea with a loved one. Or take a friend out for tea. Or, for long distance friends, raise a cup of tea in their honor and maybe send them an email, a letter, or give them a call. Perhaps just saying to someone “I want you to be happy” might lighten their spirits just a little. There are a lot of holidays that are created to honor someone, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, even Thanksgiving. It’s nice to have these special days, even though we should, of course, be thankful and loving all the year round. I Want you to be Happy Day is no exception to this. We should want everyone to be happy every day. So maybe we can all start with this thought on March 3rd and carry it on every day for the rest of the year. Find one person each day and wish them happiness in whatever creative way you find to express your feelings for them.
Now here’s a day I don’t think we should celebrate even for one day. March 8th is Be Nasty Day. Hmm…. Again, it’s a made up day, but it begs the question, who would want to create such a day anyway? I think if someone had sent the creator of this day a package of Simpson & Vail tea, they would have been so busy enjoying I want you to be Happy Day that they would never have dreamed up Be Nasty Day!
March 22 is World water day. Well that’s something every tea drinker can celebrate and embrace. We all know that the best cup of tea starts with great water. So, this is definitely a day made for tea drinkers everywhere, to come together to try to make a difference to the many people living without a supply of fresh, clean, safe water.
March 29th is National Mom & Pop Business Day. I know I wouldn’t be working at Simpson & Vail if it weren’t for my Mom & Pop. They purchased the company in the 70’s and embodied the national Mom & Pop business model – working late hours, sacrificing family events for work, etc. But they did (and do) love what they do!
I probably could come up with a tea reference for every celebration, so here goes. On a website I found a list of the celebrations in the month of March.
• Music in Our Schools Month – who doesn’t want a nice cup of tea while listening to music?
• National Craft Month – how about making your own teabags, tea & herb scented oils, or tea blends for cooking – these crafts all make great gifts!
• National Irish American Heritage Month was designated by Congress in 1995. – Irish … tea … enough said!
• National Nutrition Month – there have been many articles over the last 30 years supporting teas healthy properties!
• National Women’s History Month – look at the women in history who have influenced tea: Catherine of Braganza wife of King Charles II of England (credited with introducing tea to England), Anna, Duchess of Bedford, (considered the inventor of the afternoon teatime), all the female tea merchants around the globe, and, most importantly, all the women throughout history who have sometimes gone unnoticed for their enormous role in the tea industry. I speak, of course, of the women who have worked day after day picking the tea we all enjoy so much!
So have a grand ole time in this merry month of March. While we wait for Spring, perhaps you can indulge in a March activity whether it is celebrating a loved one, supporting a local Mom & Pop business, lending a hand to the clean water efforts, or celebrating history and traditions. All with a cup of tea of course!
Enjoy!
