International Peace Day

September 21^st is the International Day of Peace. This “day” was established in 1981 to promote the concept of peace throughout the world through education and social events that highlight ways to bring peace to our planet.  The United Nations also makes an effort to promote, to warring nations, the observance of a cease fire on this day so humanitarian aid can be supplied.  At noon on the 21^st there is a moment of silence for meditation and to contemplate offering peace outward. This year’s theme is the “Right of Peoples to Peace” which supports the UN’s resolution towards peace and “recognizes that the promotion of peace is vital for the full enjoyment of all human rights.”

There are many ways to encourage peace in ourselves, our communities and our nations. I found many websites offering great ideas for promoting Peace Day such as social media posts and signing pledges showing your commitment to furthering peace.  I also found information on how to start discussion groups, how to organize a march or event, and how to host a global feast gathering to celebrate and share different cultures and ideas.  There are links to sites that will be live streaming peace movements throughout the world on the 21st. There are also many ideas that suggest ways to connect children to the Peace movement.

Luckily we have access to a wealth of helpful information online where you can find great websites showing individuals and companies that are working towards peace and promoting goodness.  In addition to the links above there is also the Pathways to Peace and on facebook Peace Day to name just a couple. One that I follow on facebook is the Random Acts of Kindness. Perhaps our commitment towards peace could be as simple as offering a kind gesture to someone. Our one small deed can radiate throughout our communities to create a very large change.

We can start simply on the 21^st with a cup of tea and meditation before heading off to change our worlds. We have the power in our grasp to help our neighbors. So many people want peace while a few create the havoc. Let’s not let the few dictate the future of the many. Won’t you join me?
