From the mountainous region of Colombia, in an area steeped in biodiversity, along the western slope of the Andes, is the Bitaco tea estate. The gentle mist from the mountains, rich soil, and ample rainfall all stimulate the growth of the tea bushes, producing a tea with unique characteristics.

Bitaco Tea owns over 200 acres of tea plants that are cultivated at over 6,000 feet above sea level in the region of Choco. This region enjoys a high rainfall and has exceptional biodiversity. The tea gardens are located next to a thriving, protected rain forest, the Bitaco Regional Forest Reserve, where there is a wide diversity of flora and fauna: 256 bird species, 28 amphibian species, 23 reptile species and 772 species of plants. The garden, located near the Equator, enjoys a consistent climate which results in a bountiful production of tasty, delicate tea-tips that are picked and processed throughout the year.

Bitaco Tea not only cultivates exceptional teas, they also are committed to their community. They created the Agricola Himalaya Foundation to develop and improve programs focusing on education, especially for local children. Activities focus on the improvement of infrastructure, recreational opportunities, local culture and access to technology. See more at: Agricola Himalaya Foundation

Great in Blends

Heres my one small contribution to the S&V community: this tea works wonderfully in breakfast blends! I really like it solo, too, but at some point started to find its special raisiny note a bit too insistent. I tried adding some to my breakfast blend, and it harmonizes beautifully (~20%, along with a blend of Assam, Ceylon, and Kenya). If you like fairly robust and malty blends, consider giving it a go!

Very Malty

This is a unique malty tea. A bit different then Im used to with a very full body. I like it, but I expect it will take a bit of acquiring the taste. I do recommend, its worth trying a great Colombian Tea.

Very Impressed

I had bought nearly a dozen black tea samples from here, and this is the one that I'm incredibly fond of. It is well balanced with typical good black tea qualities, but its prominently sweet flavor is the real joy, similar to a tippy Keemun or Yunnan Chinese black tea. I had also tried the Tippy Colombian black tea (T2), which is comparatively similar, but distinct; More malty and less sweet, but still sweet. I like this one more, but both are worth trying.

Nice, strong black tea

I have never tried tea from Colombia, and I am happy with this purchase. The taste of the tea is nice and strong. I prefer my tea unsweetened, but I bet this would taste good sweetened. The leaves are very long, so I put a little more than 1 tsp per serving because I prefer a strong taste.

Smooth and Flavorful

I just enloyed two pots of this tea and developed a profound respect for Colombia Black tea. First, it was so smooth and sweet, and the sweetness was more than a fruity kind of sweet, more closer to a raisin type of sweetness to me. I could only say "wow" because that was exactly how I felt. In the mornings, I usually have either my Dunsmore East or James Joyce Tea Blend, but I will reserve this very special tea for the afternoon when I bring out my "British bone china cup and saucer" and pull out my favorite Brown Betty teapot. This tea is simply delightful!
